National Cookie Day, a holiday started by the Blue Chip Cookie Company, is celebrated on December 4 each year as a day to enjoy cookies. Some of the most popular cookies in early America were macaroons and gingerbread cookies, but now chocolate chip is one of the most popular varieties.
The word "cookie" comes from the Dutch word "koekie," which means "little cake." The cookie originated in Persia around the 7th century, becoming popular in Europe in the 14th century. They became popular across the world because the ingredients they are made from travel well. In some English-speaking countries, cookies are called biscuits.
