The national flower of Nigeria is the Costus. The flower was chosen because it is commonly found growing throughout the country.
The Costus is a perennial herbaceous plant found in tropical regions, such as those found in Africa, Asia and the Americas. One particular species, the Costus spectabilis, is generally the one used as the national flower of Nigeria. The flowers can be seen on the country's coat of arms, though they mistakenly are represented as red flowers instead of yellow. Other symbols of Nigeria include its birds, the eagle and black crowned crane, and its motto "Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress."
