The peacock's natural habitat is the forest or rain forest, and this brightly colored bird lives in India, Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and Africa. Zoos obtain these birds from commercial hatcheries.
Peacocks roam freely in the wild, taking cover up in the trees at night to sleep and avoid predators. A peacock that has access to water, food and shelter will not leave its immediate area. This is why peacocks roam freely around zoos without flying away.
In their home countries, these birds are sometimes kept as companion animals. The males are brightly colored and the females are monotone.
