Why do you need a 220-to-110 converter?

A 220 volt to 110 volt converter is necessary when travelling between continents due to the different standards of electrical outlet shapes between the United States and a large portion of Asia and Europe. Travelers from countries who use a 220 volt standard need a converter to plug in equipment.

As of 2014, some computers and electrical equipment are manufactured with a smart power supply that can alternate between 220 volts and 110 volts. Without a 220 volt to 110 volt converter, however, the international traveler is unable to plug electrical devices into outlets due to the difference in outlet shapes. In some cases, a converter that doubles as a transformer may be necessary to adjust between different electrical standards without causing damage to the equipment being plugged in.
