Do you need a U.S. passport to travel to Mexico?

A valid U.S. passport is required to travel to Mexico when traveling by air. A U.S. passport or passport card may be used when traveling to Mexico by land or sea.

When traveling by air to Mexico, not only is a U.S. passport required, but the passport must have at least one blank page to be stamped by immigration officials, and the passport cannot be expiring within six months. Minors under the age of 16 are not required to have a valid U.S. passport to travel to and from Mexico, and they may use a certified birth certificate in lieu of a passport or passport card.
