A negative vote is sometimes called a NOTA, or "none of the above" vote. It is a type of vote that is allowed in some jurisdictions across the globe.

As of 2013, there are 14 countries which allow a NOTA or negative vote on the ballot. It is seen in some cases as a means of pressuring political parties to field appropriate and viable candidates.

The measure also encourages voters to participate, since they may cast a vote even if they do not actually approve of any of the candidates on the ballot. It is seen by voters as a way of expressing their dissatisfaction with the ballot.
