Is Nelson Mandela alive?

Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95 on Dec. 5, 2013. He passed away at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was a tireless proponent of human and civil rights and was an active leader in the anti-apartheid movement in the 1920s.

Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his efforts in working to defeat apartheid. The award was given jointly to both Mandela and F.W. de Klerk, former president of South Africa.

Mandela was married three times and had a total of six children. July 18 is dubbed Mandela Day, which is an international holiday that celebrates his legacy and promotes global peace.
