The New Mexico state song is "Oh, Fair New Mexico." Sung and composed by Elizabeth Garrett, the blind daughter of the famous killer of Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, the song features an additional arrangement by John Philip Sousa.
New Mexico Governor Washington E. Lindsey officially signed off on the bill that made "Oh, Fair New Mexico" the state song in 1917; however, Garrett composed the song in 1915 while visiting friends in Santa Fe and had the copyright on it that year. The song became popular with New Mexico's lawmakers that same year when Garrett sang it for them on February 26.
