According to the Mayo Clinic, a normal A1C level for a person who does not have diabetes is between 4.5 and 6 percent. For people with diabetes, an A1C level of below 7 percent is optimal.
The A1C test is a blood test used to diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes and to determine how well previously diagnosed diabetes is being managed, explains the Mayo Clinic. The American Diabetes Association says that the A1C test shows average blood sugar levels over a two- to three-month period, which gives a good idea of how well a diabetes treatment plan is working.
