DeMeester scores greater than 14.72 show significant reflux, explains ganfd.org. The score determines the severity of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and was established by Tom R. DeMeester, M.D., Chairman Emeritus at USC Department of Surgery -renowned for his expertise in pulmonary disease.
Endoscopy, manometry and 24-hour pH monitoring are outpatient tests used to determine the DeMeester score, explains WebMD. Factors evaluated within the tests to determine the score include: the percentages of both upright and supine reflux, total reflux time, number of episodes in which pH is less than 4, number of episodes lasting longer than five minutes and length of the longest episode of reflux.
