The normal range for serum magnesium in the human body is 1.7 to 2.2 milligrams per deciliter, according to the National Institutes of Health. The NIH notes that it is wise to discuss the meaning of any specific results with the doctor who ordered the serum magnesium test.
Abnormally high levels of magnesium in the blood can indicate dehydration, diabetic acidosis, chronic renal failure, Addison disease or oliguria (decreased urine output). Abnormally low levels of magnesium in the blood can indicate alcoholism, too much insulin, ulcerative colitis, toxemia of pregnancy, pancreatitis, hypoparathyroidism, hyperaldosteronism, hepatic cirrhosis, hemodialysis, delirium tremens or chronic diarrhea, according to the NIH.
