Omeprazole magnesium is a medication that treats esophageal and stomach complications, such as ulcers and acid reflux disease. Its primary purpose is to reduce acidity in the stomach, according to WebMD.
Omeprazole magnesium reduces other symptoms, such as persistent cough, heartburn and swallowing problems. This medicine reduces acid damage to the esophagus and stomach lining, helps to prevent ulcers, and may reduce the risk of throat cancer, claims WebMD. The side effects of omeprazole magnesium include abdominal pain and headache. It may promote the growth of Clostridium difficile, a bacterium for which immediate medical treatment is required, and extended use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency.
