Omeprazole DR is a delayed-release medication that treats esophagus and stomach issues, states WebMD. Omeprazole DR can prevent ulcers, can heal acid damage of the esophagus and stomach and may also prevent cancer of the esophagus.
Omeprazole is classified as a proton pump inhibitor, explains WebMD. Over-the-counter omeprazole is used to treat regular heartburn. Omeprazole may take one to four days before showing results, so this medicine is not used for immediate relief. Abdominal pain and headaches are possible side effects of taking omeprazole. Serious side effects include muscle spasms, an altered heartbeat and seizures. Serious allergic reactions to this medicine are rare.
