Protein is not found in normal urine, states WebMD. The presence of protein in urine is usually an indication of kidney disease or another health condition such as cancer, kidney damage, high blood pressure, lupus, diabetes, heart failure, lead or mercury poisoning, or pregnancy.
However, the presence of protein in urine can also result from much less serious causes such as exposure to heat and cold, fever, emotional stress, and strenuous exercise, states Mayo Clinic. Consult with a doctor whenever urine tests positive for protein to determine whether additional testing or treatment is necessary. Follow-up tests may include a 24-hour urine test.
