The novel “The Outsiders†has been banned from some schools and public libraries because of its portrayal of gang violence, strong language, family dysfunction and underage smoking and drinking. Other schools still use this novel as part of their required reading curriculum, particularly in middle school and high school.
Published in 1967, this novel follows the turbulent lives of two different social groups of teens in Tulsa, Oklahoma, during the 1960s. The novel was controversial when it was released in the late '60s, and it remains controversial as of 2014. It is ranked number 43 on the American Library Association’s Top 100 Most Challenged Books of 1990 through 2000.
