What is an NPI provider number?

An NPI, short for National Provider Identifier, is a unique, 10-digit identification number assigned to a covered health care provider to simplify billing, states the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Provider organizations such as group practices, clinics and hospitals are also given NPIs, according to the American Dental Association.

Federal law requires providers who are considered covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act standards to get an NPI number and to include it on all electronic transactions, according to the American Dental Association. NPIs uniquely identify providers during standard transactions such as insurance claims, states Merck Manuals.
