What is a physician's NPI number?
By Forinfos - 13/05/2026 - 0 comments
An NPI number is a unique 10-digit, correlation-free ID number assigned to health care providers in the United States. NPI stands for National Provider Identification. It is part of the Health Insurance Portability and Acceptability Act, enacted in 1996.
Health planners use the NPI number to identify individual and organizational health care providers. These providers use the number for all their administrative and financial transactions related to HIPAA.
The ID carries the provider's name and business address. It does not contain any other information about the providers or the types of services they offer, and thus can be shared without any disclosure risk.
