National Provider Identifier numbers are assigned to covered health care providers and must be used in certain administrative and financial transactions, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Use of an NPI number is required under federal regulations, specifically the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.

Under HIPAA, health care providers must share their NPI numbers with any entity who needs to use the number for billing purposes, notes the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Entities that require use of the NPI number include physicians and other health care providers, claim clearinghouses, government programs such as Medicare and health insurance plans.
