What is NTFS?

NTFS is a file system format developed by Windows for the NT operating system family. The file format was first introduced on July 1993 for the Windows NT 3.1 and uses a bitmap file allocation structure. NTFS is an abbreviation for "New File Technology System."

The NTFS format includes features that improve its stability over older formats, such as FAT and HPFS. Some of the features include transaction logs for disk failure recovery, improved metadata support and improved data structures. As of 2014, Microsoft has released five versions of the NTFS format. The last release occurred in the autumn of 2001 with Windows XP.
