Does an NTSC game work on a PlayStation 2 with a PAL format?

An NTSC game for PlayStation 2 does not work on a PAL-formatted PlayStation 2. NTSC and PAL are separate formats and are incompatible with one another.

The NTSC format is used primarily in North America, South Korea and Japan. The PAL format is used in most of Europe, Australia, and parts of Africa and Asia. NTSC and PAL formats are not compatible because they have different frame rates and aspect ratios. The PlayStation 2 offers four different regions for its consoles and games, including NTSC and PAL. Games from one region cannot be played on a console from another region.
