Some nursing titles are RN, LPN, MSN, APRN and CNS. The postnominal credentials follow a nurse's name, with the highest credential listed first. There are more than 200 specialty and sub-specialty nursing certifications.
A registered nurse or RN typically performs patient care and has a bachelor's degree in nursing, an associate nursing degree or a nursing diploma from an accredited program. The Licensed Practical Nurse or LPN is a nurse who works under the supervision of an RN or doctor. Many nurses who have a Master of Science in Nursing degree or MSN become nursing administrators.
An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or APRN may not only provide primary care, but may also write medical prescriptions in many states. A Clinical Nurse Specialist is an APRN who has a specialty in a specific area of health care such as diabetes, geriatrics or oncology. CNSs must also have completed a master's or doctorate degree.
