OPI, the name of a top brand of nail polish, actually stands for Odontorium Products Inc., the original name of the company that became OPI. Originally, the company made dental products that used acrylics, then expanded into nail products because the acrylics were similar to those in nail polish.

OPI moved quickly into nail products after a new CEO came on board in 1981. By 1989, the company was focused entirely on nail products. Each year, OPI releases 160 colors of nail polish and gel, retiring old colors to keep the company's palette fresh. As of 2014, OPI sells more than 50 million bottles of nail polish annually.
