SSI is an abbreviation used for "Supplement Security Income," a program administered by the Social Security administration. They give out monthly benefits to people with limited resources and income, especially those who are blind, disabled or over the age of 65.

Children with disabilities or blindness are also be eligible for SSI benefits. SSI beneficiaries can receive medical assistance for doctor bills, hospital bills and prescription drugs. Although this system is very similar to Social Security, there are several differences. For instance, SSI benefits, unlike Social Security, are not based on a person's previous work. These benefits are financed by Unites States Treasury's general funds.
