What is the official size of horseshoe pits?

Horseshoe pits must be at a minimum 31 inches by 43 inches and a maximum of 36 inches by 72 inches. When building a horseshoe pit, the pitching platforms must increase in size accordingly as the pits decreases from the maximum size.

Rule changes over time allowed pit sizes to be as small as 31 inches by 43 inches to minimize the amount of pit fill material. If smaller than the maximum size, the extra space must be filled with the same material as the platforms or another material different than the pit. If a pit has thick frames or sidewalls, such as those made with lumber, the minimum and maximum inside pit dimensions still apply.
