At the age of 67, George Washington died of epiglottitis after spending 50 years, nearly his entire adult life, serving his country. He was buried in a vault at his Mount Vernon home.
On Dec. 12, 1799, Washington was caught in a cold winter rain while supervising his plantation on horseback. He was late coming home and refused to change out of his wet clothes. The next morning, he woke with a sore throat, but still insisted on working outside in the snow. Early on Dec. 14, he woke unable to breathe and sent for the doctor. After four doctors tried a variety of treatments, including bleeding and blistering, the first president died late that evening.
