George Washington was born on Feb. 22, 1732. His place of birth was Westmoreland County, Virginia, at his father Augustine Washington's plantation near Pope's Creek.
George Washington was the eldest of his parents' six children. In 1735, the family moved to the Little Hunting Creek Plantation, a little ways up the Potomac River. This area would later be renamed Mount Vernon. Although little is known about George Washington's childhood, his father died when he was only 11 years old. Later, George began surveying land, later to be named the official surveyor of Culpepper County as a teenager. In 1752, George's brother died, leaving him the sole heir of the Washington estates.
