To check for new email messages, a person simply goes to the login page specific to the provider, enters the username and password in the fields provided and clicks "Enter." If the person enters the information correctly, the next stop is the account inbox. At that point, the account holder has the ability to view and respond to all messages.

Checking email from a smartphone is often quicker. Most smartphones have the ability to register email accounts so that incoming messages automatically show up in the phone. These phones display an appropriate icon to go immediately to the inbox without entering a password.
