What is an online university?

An online university, or online college, is an institute of higher learning that provides classes online rather than, or in addition to, a physical location. These institutions generally offer degrees and/or certificates and are often accredited by the same bodies that offer accreditation to traditional schools.

The first online university to be accredited in the United States was Jones International University in 1996. Online colleges have become popular because they are often less expensive due to the lack of overhead involved in maintaining a physical location and provide students the freedom to view lectures and participate in discussions on their own schedule.
