Skeletal muscles are the only type of muscle composed of multinucleated cells. Skeletal muscle cells take form as cylindrical fibers, which contain several different types of cells fused together, resulting in a multinucleated cell.
Skeletal muscle cells require an ample network of blood vessels and nerves in order to serve their purpose of contraction. Contraction is dependent on nerve impulses sent to the skeletal muscle cells as well as essential mitochondria and protein filaments found in the cells. These nerve impulses are delivered to skeletal muscle cells through a system of nerves and capillaries. Skeletal muscle cells are bundled together and protected by a tissue layer called the perimysium.
