The type of muscle that is voluntary and striated is skeletal muscle. This type of muscle has a banded appearance called striations. The peripheral nervous system controls skeletal muscle.
Skeletal muscles move the bones of the body. The functional unit of skeletal muscle is a sarcomere, which consists of thick filaments, called myosin, and thin filaments, called actin. The action of the actin and myosin fibers sliding past one another causes the muscle to contract.
The neuromuscular junction is where the nerve cell meets the muscle. The signal that tells the muscle to contract or relax comes from the motor neuron. The energy the muscle cell uses to contract comes from the energy-rich molecule ATP.
