Do orchids make good house plants?

Orchids make beautiful and unique houseplants. It is important to select the right variety of orchid for the growing conditions and to provide the proper care.

There are thousands of species of orchids. While some are fussy and difficult to grow, others are tough, hardy and adaptable. With proper watering, temperature, light, fertilizer and humidity, orchids thrive as houseplants. It is especially important that orchids not be planted in soil or overwatered since their roots need to breathe and dry out between waterings. In their natural environment, orchids attach their roots to trees and vines and store water in their leaves, stems and roots when it becomes available to them.
