A vacuole is a fluid-filled sac that stores food and water in cells. Vacuoles are most commonly found in plant cells, but they also exist in some bacteria and animal cells.

Vacuoles are formed when the Golgi complex and endoplasmic reticulum release vesicles. These vesicles bind together into small vacuoles that grow larger as the cell develops. A mature plant cell often has one central vacuole. This vacuole aids in cell growth by exerting pressure on the cell walls due to water absorption and gives the plant cell a rigid structure. Vacuoles process and dispose of waste material due to the high acid content in the fluid.
