Nonprofit organizations, including Small Paws Rescue and the SmallDog Rescue and Humane Society, rescue miniature dogs. Small Paws Rescue is an organization dedicated to rescuing Bichon dog breeds. The SDR also rescues other small dog breeds, including Shih Tzus, Poodles, Pugs, Maltese, Chihuahuas and Terriers.

Small Paws Rescue is one of the largest Bichon Frise rescue groups in the United States. The group claims to have rescued over 10,000 Bichons since 1999. Most of the dogs are rescued from shelters or abusive owners, or are surrendered by their owners due to a variety of circumstances. The organization has several volunteer groups in each state. The SDR, on the other hand, is a Georgia-based dog rescue group dedicated in rescuing homeless dogs in the state.

Unlike local animal shelters, dog rescue groups do not euthanize dogs when they run out of room for more animals. Insteead, these rescue groups provide foster homes for the dogs. Individuals who want to adopt dogs from a rescue group may need to undergo an evaluation process to ensure that the animals are going to a safe and happy home. Because most rescue groups also treat medical conditions and put a lot of care to each rescued dog, the adoption fees are higher compared to adopting dogs from the Humane Society or from local shelters.
