What is Osage orange lumber?

Osage orange lumber is made from the wood of the Maclura pomifera tree. The wood's color ranges from golden to bright yellow and ages to a dark medium brown. It has a straight grain with fine-to-medium texture with a high natural luster.
Osage orange wood is prized for its durability and decay resistance, which makes it popular for fence posts. While its hardness and density make it difficult to work, it does not dull blades, and it turns easily. The wood takes finishes, stains and glues well. Since the wood is knotty and twisted, it is generally used for items such as turnings, bows, small specialty items and musical instruments.
