To use OBD II scanning software, you need an OBD II interface adapter. The adapter connects the OBD II port in a car to a laptop, tablet or other device. The most common type of OBD II adapters use Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to provide a wireless connection.
Popular OBD II interfaces include the Automatic Link, the Craven OBD II Connector and the PLX Kiwi 2. The Automatic Link is designed for use with iOS devices and includes software to track driving habits. The Craven OBD II Connector and PLX Kiwi 2 are available in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi versions for Android and iOS, respectively. They can be used with apps such as Torque and DashCommand to read out engine management data and perform diagnostics.
