BC Ferries is owned by B.C. Ferry Authority, a company created under the Coastal Ferry Act in April 2003. Before that, BC Ferries was a Crown corporation.

BC Ferries' operations are guided by the Coastal Ferry Services Contract between the company and the government of British Columbia, Canada. BC Ferries provides transport services on 24 routes to 47 terminals using 35 crafts. Until April 2003, BC Ferries was a Crown corporation, meaning it was owned by the Canadian government but operated in a somewhat independent manner. In general terms, Crown corporations exist to provide the population with necessary services because the private sector is unable or unwilling to do so.
