As of 2004, Roc-A-Fella Records is owned by Island Def Jam. It was previously owned by Jay-Z, Damon Dash and Kareem “Biggs†Burke. Island Def Jam is owned by Universal Music Group.
In 2004, Jay-Z was named CEO of Def Jam Recordings, reporting to chairman of the Island Def Jam Music Group, Antonio "LA" Reid. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, sold his 50 percent stake in Roc-A-Fella to Island Def Jams in the process. This gave him the ability to manage the label he founded in 1994. Universal Music Group owns 32 record labels, including Def Jam Recordings and the roster of artists from former Roc-A-Fella Records.
