USA Today is owned by the Gannett Company and was founded by Al Neuharth in 1982 during his time as CEO. Al Neuharth was a journalist and businessman; he retired as acting Chairman of the Board for Gannett in 1989.
The mission of USA Today is "to serve as a forum for better understanding and unity." The newspaper was ranked first on the list of top 25 U.S. daily papers by circulation by the Alliance for Audited Media, as of 2014.
After retiring from Gannett, Al Neuharth wrote the "Plain Talk" column for USA Today until August 2010. Neuharth passed away on April 19, 2013.
