The main shrine to St. Padre Pio is located in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. The shrine is centered around Pio's tomb where visitors can view his body, his former monastic cell and his few earthly possessions.
Padre Pio was a Franciscan friar who was said to have possessed many spiritual gifts such as miraculous healing, visions of Jesus and Mary and, most famously, the stigmata. He spent the last 52 years of his life in the friary at San Giovanni Rotondo, dying in 1968. Pio was declared Blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1999, and canonized in 2002. His shrine is the second most popular Catholic pilgrimage site in the world.
