How do you paint aluminum siding?

It is possible to paint aluminum siding by cleaning it, sanding away existing paint, applying a primer and painting. When painting, use 100 percent acrylic latex paint.

1. Clean the aluminum siding
Clean the aluminum siding using non-phosphate soap, water and a heavy-duty brush. Rinse the soap away, then allow it to dry for 2 to 3 days.
2. Remove any existing paint
Apply medium-grade sandpaper to a sanding block and use it to remove any existing paint. Take a clean rag and use it to brush away dust.
3. Use an appropriate primer before applying the paint
Choose a day that is dry and cool to apply primer and paint. If the siding is rusting, use a thinned alkyd-based primer. Otherwise, apply latex-based primer, and allow it to dry.
4. Choose an appropriate paint and apply it
Use a 100 percent acrylic paint on top of the primer. Apply the first coat, allow it to dry fully and apply a second. For a good finish, use a paintbrush rather than a roller.

Some people may wish to avoid latex paints and primers altogether, as they cause ammonia. When ammonia comes into contact with rust, it gives off noxious fumes. In addition, it can give off fumes that make painting in the sun difficult.
