The Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station is located in Wintersburg, Ariz., about 45 miles west of Phoenix. Serving over 4 million people, it's the largest nuclear power facility in the United States and the only plant of its size not located near a large body of water.
The plant, operated by the Arizona Public Service Company, uses three pressurized water reactors that are cooled with treated sewage water from surrounding cities. Palo Verde, which began operations in 1988 after 12 years of construction, employs over 2,000 people and provides 35 percent of Arizona-generated power. The plant is secured by armed guards and protected by the National Guard when national security is at risk.
