According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the pass rate for the U.S. citizenship exam is 91 percent, as of October 2014. The average naturalization processing time is just over five months.
On Oct. 1, 2008, a new naturalization test became mandatory. Prior to this, applicants had a choice between two exams. The aforementioned 91 percent average pass rate is based on the new mandatory exam. The test emphasizes the founding principles of American democracy, civic learning, U.S. history, and the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship. In order to become American citizens, applicants must pass both the English and civic portions of the naturalization exam.
