The Patagonian toothfish, or Chilean sea bass, lives in the extremely cold oceans of the Southern Hemisphere. Separate populations migrate between the continental shelves and undersea mountain ranges near South America or islands off of Antarctica, residing at depths from 45 to 3850 meters.
Juvenile Patagonian toothfish generally live along the sea bed at depths of 150 to 400 meters. As they grow, they migrate to depths of more than 3000 meters, living in the deepest areas as they reach adulthood. The adult fish spawn in deep water, and their eggs end up floating anywhere from approximately 50 to 500 meters below the surface.
