Who was Pedro Alvares Cabral?

Pedro Alvares Cabral, Portuguese explorer in the 16th century, is known as the first navigator to land on four continents: Europe, America, Asia and Africa. Cabral was also the first explorer to reach Brazil in 1500, when he claimed the land for Portugal.
Cabral, who was the son of nobility, was appointed to his position by King Manuel I of Portugal. He was forced to retire after King Manuel appointed another Portuguese explorer, Vasco Da Gama, to be in charge of the exploration of India. Cabral, who died in 1520, is considered a major historical figure in the Age of Discovery.
