Pennsylvania is located in the Middle Atlantic region in the United States. Its unique position gives it a relative location in both the western and northern hemispheres. Pennsylvania is bordered by Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and New York.

The ninth most densely populated state in the United States, Pennsylvania measures 283 miles from east to west and 170 miles from north to south. The state has an area of 46,055 square miles and experiences humid summers and cold winters. As of 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates Pennsylvania's population at 12,773,801 people, and the state's economy ranks sixth in the country at $644 billion.
