Pennsylvania is a state in the Middle Atlantic region of the United States. One of the original 13 colonies, Pennsylvania was the second state to enter the Union, achieving statehood on Dec. 12, 1787.
The "Keystone State" occupies roughly 45,000 square miles of land and is bordered by New York to the north, Ohio to the west, West Virginia to the south and west, Maryland and Delaware to the south and New Jersey to the east. The capital rests in the south central town of Harrisburg; the largest city is Philadelphia, with roughly 1.5 million residents. Main attractions of the state include the historical sites at Gettysburg and Valley Forge and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.
