When did Pennsylvania become a state?

Pennsylvania was granted statehood on Dec. 12, 1787. It was the second of the original 13 colonies to be granted statehood. Delaware was the first of the 13 colonies to be granted statehood, which occurred only 5 days before Pennsylvania becoming a state.

New Jersey, Georgia and Connecticut were the states that followed Pennsylvania in becoming states. New Jersey became a state on Dec. 18, 1787. Georgia followed on Jan. 2, 1788, and Connecticut became a state on Jan. 8, 1788.

As of 2014, states continued to gain statehood up until Hawaii became the 50th state in the United States on Aug. 21, 1959.
