The White House is located on 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., Washington, D.C. The White House has been the residence of every American president since John Adams began living there in 1800.
In 1814 the White House was set on fire by the British Army in the Burning of Washington. The fire destroyed the interior and most of the exterior. President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed residence in October 1817. Before 1800, George Washington resided in New York as president, and then he and John Adams both resided in Robert Morris's city house at 190 High St. in Philadelphia, while the federal city of Washington, D.C. was being constructed.
