What percent of Americans are homeless?

In January 2015, 564,708 people were homeless in the United States, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness. This total represents about 0.17 percent of the total U.S. population of 322.7 million and included 83,170 chronically homeless people and 47,725 veterans.
There is typically a high turnover in the homeless population, meaning the problem affects many more people than the number who are homeless on any one night. A 2007 study by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty found that 3.5 million people in the United States experience homelessness at some point in a given year. That total represents more than 1 percent of the population.
