As of 2012, 39 percent of college students drink coffee, according to the NPD consumer market research group. The percentage of college-aged coffee drinkers has steadily risen in the past decade as more students switch from caffeinated sodas to coffee.
Most college students drink coffee for the caffeine content, which helps them stay awake to study. The average cup of Starbucks coffee contains five times more caffeine than the equivalent can of Diet Coke.
While coffee consumption is linked to some health benefits, including a decrease in dementia and depression in women, the caffeine in coffee makes it habit forming and contributes to sleep problems.
